Uikousen

Uikousen, or 'Marine Warfare,' emerged during the early Meiji period in Japan as part of a burgeoning culture of educational board games designed to cultivate strategic thinking and national awareness among youth. These games often drew inspiration from the shifting geopolitical landscape of the Pacific, reflecting Japan's rapid modernization and its increasing focus on naval capabilities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The design of Uikousen typically features lithographic illustrations characterized by the aesthetic sensibilities of the Meiji era, blending traditional Japanese artistic influences with imported Western cartographic styles. These games were produced by various regional publishers to serve both as recreational pastimes and as tools for fostering a sense of civic duty and geographic familiarity, ultimately becoming staples in middle-class households of the time.
