Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki

Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki, known in English as The Moving Frogs' Snow Battle, is a foundational work of Japanese animation produced in 1934. It was created during a period when the Japanese film industry was experimenting with techniques to compete with international animation standards, moving away from simple folk tales toward more dynamic character-driven narratives.

The film was directed and illustrated by Yasuji Murata, a pioneer of Japanese cel animation who was deeply influenced by the rhythmic movement and expressive character designs seen in early Western animation. Murata focused on anthropomorphizing animal figures to convey humor and conflict, resulting in a charming, stylized depiction of frogs engaged in a playful snow fight that showcased the technical evolution of early Showa-era independent filmmaking.
