Meet Penelope, the absent-minded young koala. Rarely seen without Deudeu – her favourite stuffed rabbit – Penelope likes nothing more than finding another adventure in the most unlikely of places. A simple gust of wind blowing her hat away can lead to Penelope running her own stall atop a tree stump where she trades flowers for apples, and paper planes for acorns. From games of hide and seek with her friends, to playing with the bubbles in the bath or counting sheep during nap time, Penelope’s life is never dull – even if she does wear odd socks when she gets herself dressed in the morning.

Where it came from
Ukkari Pénélope, known internationally as Penelope, was produced in 2006 by Nippon Animation. The series was created as an adaptation of the popular French children's picture book series written by Anne Gutman and illustrated by Georg Hallensleben. The studio aimed to translate the distinct, soft-edged aesthetic of the original books into a gentle stop-motion-style animation format that would appeal to preschoolers while retaining the warm, minimalist charm of the source material.
The design of the series centers on the titular blue koala, whose inquisitive nature serves as the focal point for simple, episodic life lessons. Upon its release, the series was well-received for its calm pacing and high-quality character designs, which successfully captured the artistic sensibilities of Hallensleben. It has since become a staple of early childhood programming in Japan and remains a recognizable brand within the broader ecosystem of European-Japanese animation collaborations.
