Ukkari Pénélope OVA

Ukkari Pénélope, known internationally as Pénélope tête en l'air, began as a series of popular children's picture books created by Anne Gutman and illustrated by Georg Hallensleben. The characters, featuring a charming blue koala, were adapted into an animated format by Nippon Animation in 2006. The 2007 OVA followed the success of the initial television series, maintaining the distinct, painterly aesthetic that mirrors Hallensleben's original book illustrations, prioritizing a gentle pace suited for young viewers.

The animation style was designed to preserve the textured, warm feel of the source material's brushstrokes rather than opting for traditional flat digital cel animation. Produced with the oversight of the original creators, the project was intended to extend the educational and comforting themes of the books. It was well-received for its faithfulness to the source material and its soothing atmosphere, becoming a staple of children's programming in Japan and later finding an international audience through various localized adaptations.
