Ukkari Pénélope (2009)

Ukkari Pénélope was produced by Nippon Animation in 2009 as a direct adaptation of the beloved French children's book series Pénélope, created by Anne Gutman and illustrated by Georg Hallensleben. The series was developed to capture the gentle, inquisitive nature of the original picture books, focusing on the daily discoveries and minor mishaps of a young blue koala. By maintaining the distinct, expressive art style of the books, the animation sought to provide a tranquil and educational viewing experience for preschool-aged children.

The production utilized a digital cut-out animation style that mimics the textured, painterly aesthetic of Hallensleben's original illustrations. The project was well-received in Japan, particularly for its soothing pacing and faithfulness to the source material's visual identity. It remains a staple of early childhood programming, recognized for its commitment to the gentle narrative spirit that defined the Pénélope brand across international borders.
