Where it came from
Umamusume: Cinderella Gray originated as a popular manga series serialized in Weekly Young Jump starting in 2020. The narrative serves as a gritty, dramatic spin-off of the broader Umamusume: Pretty Derby franchise, focusing on the historical horse Oguri Cap and her rise from a local regional track to the elite racing circuit. The adaptation into a 2025 television series by CygamesPictures marks a tonal shift from the mainline franchise, emphasizing a more serious, underdog-centric sports drama aesthetic.
The character design and visual direction for this project translate the manga's intense, high-contrast art style into animation. The production team aimed to capture the visceral energy of horse racing, drawing heavy inspiration from real-world racing history in Japan. Upon announcement, the series was received with significant anticipation by fans who appreciated the manga's departure from the slice-of-life elements typical of the franchise, focusing instead on the grueling physical and psychological demands of competitive racing.
