Ulysses: Jeanne d'Arc and the Alchemist Knight

Ulysses: Jeanne d'Arc and the Alchemist Knight originated as a light novel series written by Mikage Kasuga, which was adapted into a twelve-episode anime series by studio AXsiZ in 2018. The story reimagines the Hundred Years' War through a fantasy lens, centering on Montmorency, an alchemist tasked with protecting a young Joan of Arc. The production sought to blend historical tragedy with supernatural elements, reflecting a trend in Japanese media of reinterpreting Western historical figures within complex fictional frameworks.

The visual direction and character designs were intended to capture a distinct aesthetic of high-fantasy animation, though the final product faced significant scrutiny upon its release. Critics and audiences noted the divergence between the series' ambitious premise and its executed animation quality, which led to a mixed reception. Despite these challenges, the work remains a point of interest for collectors of mid-2010s niche light novel adaptations, representing the studio's broader efforts to expand its repertoire within the fantasy genre.
