Where it came from
Released in 2018 as a companion to the first season of the Uma Musume: Pretty Derby anime, BNW no Chikai is a three-episode OVA that focuses on the rivalry between three specific racehorses: Biwa Hayahide, Narita Brian, and Winning Ticket. Produced by studio P.A.WORKS, which was brought on to provide additional animation support for the franchise, the project serves as a focused character study that expands on the athletic and personal dynamics of the trio, bridging the gap between the main series' broadcast events.
The production was designed to deepen the emotional stakes of the series by highlighting the individual pressures and ambitions of these three characters, moving away from the ensemble-heavy format of the main show. By utilizing P.A.WORKS' reputation for detailed character animation and atmospheric settings, the OVA helped to solidify the franchise’s appeal among fans of sports-themed anime, receiving praise for its tighter narrative focus and the distinct characterization of the three leads.
