Where it came from
Road to the Top was released in 2023 as a web-based original net animation series produced by CygamesPictures. It serves as a narrative expansion within the larger Umamusume: Pretty Derby multimedia franchise, which reinterprets famous historical Thoroughbred racehorses as anthropomorphic horse girls. The series was created to provide a more focused, dramatic character study compared to the broader ensemble cast of the main television anime adaptations.
The production sought to capture the intense rivalry between three specific horses—Narita Top Road, T.M. Opera O, and Admire Vega—during the 1999 Classic racing season. By utilizing the ONA format for a more concentrated run, the studio focused on high-quality character animation and emotional weight, successfully centering the story on the professional and personal ambitions of the runners. The project was well-received by fans of the franchise for its polished aesthetic and dedication to the lore of the real-world historical horses it portrays.
