Where it came from
Umamusume: Pretty Derby Season 2 was produced by Studio KAI and aired in 2021, marking a shift in production for the multimedia franchise from P.A. Works, which handled the first season. The series continues the story of horse girls—anthropomorphic incarnations of legendary racehorses—as they strive for glory on the track. This season specifically focuses on the emotional rivalry between Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen, grounded in the real-life historical racing careers of their namesakes.
The animation direction by Kei Oikawa emphasized high-stakes racing sequences and character-driven drama, aiming to balance the high-energy spectacle of horse racing with the personal hurdles of the protagonists. The season was widely lauded for its narrative maturity and technical improvements in 3D-assisted animation during race sequences. It remains a hallmark entry in the franchise, often cited by fans and critics alike for elevating the emotional depth of the sports anime genre.
