Where it came from
Umi wo Watatta Shika, which translates to The Deer That Crossed the Sea, is a televised production originating from NHK, Japan's national public broadcaster. Produced within the framework of NHK’s long-standing commitment to high-quality educational and cultural programming, the work serves as a narrative exploration of themes relating to nature, migration, and the intersection of wildlife with human environments. It reflects the broadcaster's traditional emphasis on meticulous research and visually atmospheric storytelling, characteristic of its documentary and anthology-style dramas.
The creative direction of this production was spearheaded by NHK’s internal production units, which often emphasize a documentary-infused narrative style to ground their fictionalized or dramatized accounts in reality. The aesthetic choices lean into a soft, contemplative visual language intended to evoke empathy for the subject matter. Upon release, the production was received as a gentle, family-oriented piece of media, noted by viewers for its thoughtful pacing and technical production values, which align with the network's broader catalog of culturally resonant Japanese television.
