Where it came from
UniteUp! emerged in 2023 as a multi-media project spearheaded by Sony Music Entertainment Japan and produced by the animation studio CloverWorks, a subsidiary of Aniplex. The series was developed as a character-driven music franchise, designed to bridge the gap between traditional anime storytelling and the idol industry. By focusing on the journey of aspiring singers across different idol groups, the project sought to capitalize on the popularity of male-idol anime while providing a platform for original music performances.
The character designs for the series were crafted by original illustrator kureta, who aimed for a distinct, vibrant aesthetic that emphasizes the unique personality of each group member. The series was received as a contemporary entry in the genre, noteworthy for its integration of high-quality vocal performances and a narrative structure that explores the challenges of professional artistic development in the modern digital landscape.
