Based on "Unico and the Kingdom of the Sun," which was newly written as a theater version, this animated film features a battle between the wizard Kukuruku and Unico. Kukuruku builds a castle using dolls transformed from men as building parts. The story revolves around the sorrow and terror of men who have been transfigured into dolls, and a girl named Cherry who wishes to recover the kindness in her brother, who is a student of Kukuruku. This work reminds us of the fact that "transformation" or "transfiguration" - favorite themes of Tezuka Osamu - involves not only material aspects, but also man's immaterial heart.

Where it came from
Unico in the Island of Magic was produced by Madhouse and Sanrio in 1983 as the second feature-length film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s manga series. Following the success of the 1981 film The Fantastic Adventures of Unico, this installment sought to expand the mythological scope of the titular unicorn, focusing on themes of environmental stewardship and the dangers of unchecked ego. The narrative pits the gentle Unico against Lord Kuruku, a sorcerer attempting to turn living beings into wooden dolls, reflecting a darker, more philosophical tone than its predecessor.
The film was directed by Moribi Murano with character designs that maintained the distinctively rounded, expressive aesthetic popularized by Tezuka. The animation team at Madhouse utilized a vibrant, pastoral color palette to contrast the whimsical forests with the unsettling, rigid nature of Kuruku’s puppets. Upon its release, the film was praised for its sophisticated blending of dark fantasy elements with children’s storytelling, solidifying Unico’s status as a cult classic within the Sanrio animated library and showcasing the studio's growing technical proficiency in the early 1980s.
