Where it came from
The Upotte!! OVA was produced as a short follow-up to the 2012 television anime series, which was adapted from the manga by Kitsune Tennouji. The franchise gained notoriety for its unusual premise, which anthropomorphizes assault rifles and other firearms as high school students attending a specialized academy. The production was intended to capitalize on the series' niche interest among gun enthusiasts and anime fans who enjoyed the blending of tactical military trivia with standard slice-of-life comedy tropes.
The animation for the series was handled by Xebec, with Sentai Filmworks securing the North American distribution rights. The designs were overseen by character designer Akio Takami, who faced the challenge of translating the manga's mechanical accuracy into a character-driven format. The series received a mixed critical reception, largely due to its eccentric fusion of intense weaponry technicality and character-based humor, ultimately establishing itself as a polarizing but distinct entry in the military-themed anime genre.
