Uproar in Heaven, also known as Havoc in Heaven, is a Chinese animated feature film directed by Wan Laiming and produced by all four of the Wan brothers. The film was created at the height of the Chinese animation industry in the 1960s, and received numerous awards. It earned the brothers domestic and international recognition.
The story is based on the earliest chapters of the classic story Journey to the West. The main character is Sun Wukong, aka the Monkey King, who rebels against the Jade Emperor of heaven.
It became one of the most influential films in all of Asia, animation or not. Countless cartoon adaptations that followed have reused the same classic story Journey to the West, yet many consider this 1964 iteration to be the most original, fitting and memorable.

Where it came from
Uproar in Heaven, or The Monkey King, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio between 1961 and 1964. Directed by Wan Laiming, the film is a cornerstone of Chinese animation, adapted from the early chapters of the classic novel Journey to the West. It was created during a period of significant state investment in nationalized cinema, aiming to fuse traditional Chinese aesthetic forms—such as Peking Opera, rhythmic movement, and ink-wash painting techniques—with the cel animation medium.
The character design for Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, was led by the acclaimed artist Zhang Guangyu, who drew deep inspiration from folk arts and mural painting. His vision aimed to capture both the playful spirit and the rebellious nature of the protagonist. Upon its release, the film was widely acclaimed for its technical sophistication and its success in establishing a distinctively Chinese visual language in animation, eventually gaining international recognition after its screening at film festivals in the 1970s and 1980s.
