Where it came from
Urda was released in 2002 as a pioneering Original Net Animation (ONA), a format that leveraged the rising popularity of high-speed internet to distribute Japanese animation directly to viewers. Produced by Media Blasters and directed by Yoshio Dan, the project was ambitious for its time, serving as an early experiment in blending traditional anime aesthetics with digital 3D-modeled backgrounds and environments.
The narrative follows a science fiction premise centered on time travel and resistance against a dystopian future. The design choices were heavily influenced by the technical limitations and creative possibilities of the early 2000s, reflecting a bridge between hand-drawn character designs and the burgeoning capability of computer-generated imagery. While the series did not achieve mainstream commercial dominance, it remains a notable artifact of the transition toward digital-first distribution models in the anime industry.
