Where it came from
The Urban Legends series was produced by the studio Mary Jane in 2016 as an entry in the adult animation market. It emerged during a period when the studio was active in exploring localized supernatural and folkloric horror themes through the lens of episodic direct-to-video releases, aiming to capitalize on the enduring popularity of Japanese urban myths within the mature animation genre.
The creative direction for the series focused on atmospheric storytelling, utilizing the OVA format to allow for longer, more detailed sequences than those typical of serialized television. While the series was designed to satisfy a niche audience interested in stylized psychological horror, it remains a relatively obscure title, noted by enthusiasts primarily for its specific animation aesthetic and its commitment to established tropes of the supernatural thriller genre.
