Where it came from
Urmă is a central entity within the Zanzou mythology, a concept originating from the experimental artistic projects spearheaded by the creative collective known as Zanzou. Conceived during the early 2000s in Romania, the project sought to blend surrealist digital illustration with philosophical storytelling. Urmă was designed as a visual representation of the 'trace' or 'imprint' left behind by unseen forces, embodying an aesthetic that prioritizes atmospheric ambiguity over traditional narrative clarity.
The character design for Urmă was developed by the group's core illustrators to evoke a sense of haunting permanence. By utilizing stark, monochromatic palettes and jagged, organic lines, the designers aimed to distance the work from conventional folklore, pushing it toward a more modern, abstract expressionism. The collection received recognition within niche European digital art circles for its ability to transform abstract conceptual identity into a cohesive, recognizable visual language.
