Where it came from
Urotsukidoji IV: Inferno Road was released in 1993 as a direct sequel to the infamous Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend series. Developed during the height of the original video animation (OVA) boom in Japan, the production was driven by the commercial success of Toshio Maeda's dark fantasy manga. It served as a continuation of the chaotic, apocalyptic narrative that sought to push the boundaries of explicit content within the anime medium at the time.
The animation was produced by the studio West Cape, which aimed to maintain the gritty, grotesque aesthetic established by the preceding entries in the franchise. Despite its attempt to expand the complex lore of the series, the film was received with significant controversy and criticism, primarily due to its intense graphic nature. It remains a hallmark of a specific era in 1990s adult animation that prioritized extreme genre experimentation over mainstream narrative conventions.
