It all begins when aliens invade and threaten to conquer the Earth! However, one member of the human race is chosen at random to duel the aliens and save the planet: Ataru Moroboshi, a lecherous slacker from Tomobiki High School who begrudgingly participates. All he has to do? Play a game of tag and catch Lum — the beautiful alien princess in a tiger-stripe bikini — by the horns. Unfortunately for Ataru, it’s not so simple, since Lum can fly and deliver electric shocks! Perseverance pays off, but once he catches her, Ataru experiences another shock: He’s now Lum’s betrothed “darling” and she isn’t going back to her home planet anytime soon!

Where it came from
Urusei Yatsura premiered in 1981 as the first television adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s influential manga series of the same name. Produced by Studio Pierrot and directed initially by Mamoru Oshii, the series was commissioned to capitalize on the popularity of the source material, which had become a cultural phenomenon for its blend of slapstick comedy, science fiction, and folklore-inspired romance. The animation style was reflective of the early eighties aesthetic, characterized by vibrant, high-energy visuals that helped establish the series as a cornerstone of the romantic comedy genre in anime.
The production is notable for the creative evolution led by Mamoru Oshii, who transitioned the tone from a straightforward comedic adaptation into a more surreal, meta-narrative exploration that influenced future generations of animators. The series centers on the chaotic life of Ataru Moroboshi and the extraterrestrial Lum Invader, a character design that became an enduring icon of Japanese pop culture. While the transition from the manga’s specific page layouts to the screen required significant adaptation, the series was widely received as a seminal work that defined the 'magical girlfriend' subgenre and showcased the creative potential of televised anime in the pre-bubble economy era.
