On a very hot summer day in Tomobiki town, Lum, Ataru, and the rest of the gang are looking forward to using the school's pool. But the teachers have other plans: setting a ludicrous obstacle course between the students in their swimsuits and the pool... naturally this ends in complete chaos.

Where it came from
Released in 2008, Urusei Yatsura: The Obstacle Course Swim Meet is a special animation produced by Sunrise to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Rumiko Takahashi’s seminal manga series. The production served as a nostalgic bridge for fans, revisiting the chaotic, high-energy slapstick humor that defined the original 1980s television adaptation, while utilizing updated digital animation techniques to refresh the iconic character designs for a modern audience.
The project was envisioned as a festive tribute, reuniting key elements of the franchise's creative legacy to celebrate its enduring cultural impact. Its design aesthetic maintains a faithful adherence to the classic visual style established in the early eighties, deliberately avoiding radical modernization to preserve the nostalgic appeal. Upon its release, it was received as a heartfelt homage, widely appreciated by long-time followers for its successful effort to capture the frenetic, endearing spirit of Lum and Ataru’s original adventures.
