Where it came from
Usakame originated in 2016 as an official spin-off series to the popular comedy manga and anime franchise Teekyu. Produced by Studio Millepensee, the series focuses on the members of the Turtle Racing Club, mirroring the rapid-fire, surreal, and hyper-energetic comedic style that characterized the parent series. It was designed to provide additional depth and side-story content for fans of the existing universe, maintaining the frantic pacing that became a hallmark of the studio's work on the property.
The series was directed by Shin Itagaki, who played a foundational role in establishing the visual identity of the Teekyu franchise. His approach focused on minimalist animation techniques that allowed for extreme comedic timing and absurd transitions, a deliberate choice meant to capture the chaotic nature of the source material. Upon release, the series was noted for its brief, high-intensity episodes, a design choice that catered to contemporary viewing habits while ensuring the humor remained as dense and punchy as the original manga panels.
