Where it came from
Usamaru originated as a character in a series of popular LINE stickers created by the Japanese illustrator sakumaru. First introduced in 2014, the character is a round, lop-eared rabbit known for its expressive, often whimsical reactions. The character's design emphasizes simplicity and soft, rounded forms, which resonated deeply with digital users across Asia, eventually leading to the character becoming a mascot for the LINE platform.
Following the immense success of the sticker sets, Usamaru was adapted into a short-form original net animation (ONA) series. These animations maintain the minimalist, endearing aesthetic of the original illustrations, focusing on brief, humorous vignettes. The transition from static digital stickers to animated shorts was received well by fans, further cementing the character's status as a staple of contemporary Japanese kawaii culture.
