Where it came from
Usavich debuted in 2006 as a series of short, dialogue-free animation clips produced by Kanaban Graphics. Directed and written by Satoshi Tomioka, the series was conceived as a stylized, surreal exploration of life inside a Soviet-era prison. The project emerged from a desire to create a minimalist yet expressive aesthetic, utilizing 3D CG animation to emphasize the physical comedy and dark humor inherent in the interactions between the two main characters, Kirenenko and Putin.
The design of the series is noted for its juxtaposition of bleak industrial environments with the vibrant, absurd behaviors of the incarcerated rabbits. Tomioka focused on rhythmic pacing and visual gags, which allowed the series to transcend language barriers and gain a significant international following online. It was initially produced for MTV Japan, where its offbeat tone and unique character design garnered a cult reputation among viewers who appreciated its departure from traditional anime conventions.
