Where it came from
Usavich debuted in 2007 as a series of short, dialogue-free episodes produced by the Japanese studio Kanaban Graphics. Directed by Satoshi Tomioka, the series follows the surreal and often violent prison life of two rabbits, Kirenenko and Putin. The project was created to showcase the studio's technical prowess in 3D animation while utilizing a distinct, dark sense of humor that subverted the typically cute expectations of rabbit-themed media.
The design of Usavich reflects a deliberate contrast between its stylized, minimalist character aesthetic and its gritty, industrial prison setting. Tomioka and his team focused on rhythmic pacing and physical comedy, which allowed the series to transcend language barriers and gain significant popularity across international internet platforms. It remains a notable example of early viral short-form animation that successfully blended unconventional themes with high-quality CGI production.
