Usaru-san

Usaru-san originated in 2009 as a series of animated shorts produced by the studio OLM, primarily recognized for their extensive work on the Pokémon franchise. The character, a monkey-like creature with a distinctively minimalist aesthetic, was developed to appeal to a younger demographic through simple, recurring comedic situations. This project emerged during a period when OLM was diversifying its portfolio to include short-form, web-distributed, and mobile-friendly animation, shifting away from their traditional long-form television broadcast focus.

The design of Usaru-san emphasizes rounded shapes and a subdued color palette, reflecting a deliberate effort to create an accessible character that could transcend language barriers. While the series did not reach the global cultural ubiquity of the studio's major hits, it was received as a charming experimental piece within the OLM catalog. The shorts are often cited by animation enthusiasts as a prime example of the studio's ability to maintain high production quality and expressive character movement even within the constraints of a restricted, special-format project.
