Ushigaeru

Ushigaeru, also known as Bullfrog, is a 1998 original net animation directed by the animator and director Hiroyuki Okiura. Produced during the experimental infancy of internet-distributed animation, the piece emerged as a brief, stylistic exploration of anthropomorphic character design and surrealist movement. It represents a period when independent creators began utilizing digital platforms to distribute short-form content outside the traditional constraints of television broadcast or theatrical release.

The animation is characterized by a stark, deliberate visual language that reflects Okiura's background in high-end feature film production, applying a level of polish seldom seen in early web-based works. The design of the titular character focuses on fluid, weight-heavy physics, intended to evoke a sense of grounded realism within a fantastical premise. Upon its release, it was noted primarily by animation enthusiasts and industry peers as a technical curiosity, signaling the future potential of the internet as a medium for artistic expression.
