After adorable “mermaid” Mamori is transferred to one of five artificial islands, she’s cornered, attacked and eventually saved by another beautiful transfer named Mirei. Unfortunately, even after the girl intervenes, Mamori’s attackers refuse to let up. Just when they think all hope is lost, Mirei and Mamori share a passionate kiss that turns the little “mermaid” into a powerful sword.

Where it came from
Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid was produced by Studio ARMS and released in 2015 as part of the broader Valkyrie Drive multimedia project, which also included a social game and a PlayStation Vita title. The series follows a group of girls stranded on a remote artificial island who gain superhuman abilities through physical intimacy, a concept central to the franchise's emphasis on high-concept action and fan-service-driven character dynamics.
The series was directed by Hiraku Kaneko, who previously gained notoriety for his work on similar genre-blending action and ecchi series. The visual aesthetic leans heavily into flashy, stylized combat sequences paired with character designs intended to emphasize the interconnected nature of the protagonists. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its provocative premise and its commitment to the established tropes of its studio, positioning it as a distinct, albeit niche, entry in the mid-2010s anime landscape.
