Where it came from
Vassalord. is a two-part original video animation series released in 2013 by Production I.G, based on the long-running manga series by Nanae Chrono. The story follows the complex relationship between a vampire hunter named Rayflo and his master, the cyborg vampire Charles-Camille. The project was conceived as an adaptation of the manga's 'Ghost-noisy' story arc, aiming to capture the series' signature blend of gothic action and interpersonal psychological tension that had garnered a dedicated following since the manga's serialization began in 2006.
The production design was overseen by director Kazuto Nakazawa, who sought to maintain the dark, intricate aesthetic established in Chrono's original illustrations. While the manga is often recognized for its heavy stylistic focus on character dynamics and noir-inspired visuals, the OVA was received as a niche addition to the vampire genre, primarily appealing to established fans of the source material who appreciated the fidelity to the gothic atmosphere and the character-driven narrative structure.
