Vatican Miracle Examiner

Vatican Miracle Examiner, known in Japan as Vatican Kiseki Chousakan, is an anime television series produced by studio J.C.STAFF and released in 2017. Based on the light novel series by Rin Fujiki, the show centers on two Catholic priests who travel the world to investigate alleged miracles, blending elements of mystery, theology, and psychological suspense. The adaptation sought to capture the atmosphere of gothic historical settings while navigating the specific character dynamics between the brilliant but physically fragile Hiraga Josef Kou and the expert cryptanalyst Roberto Nicholas.

The series design and animation direction emphasize a grounded, scholarly aesthetic suited to its Vatican setting, contrasting with the more stylized supernatural tropes common in contemporary anime. Upon its release, it was noted for its departure from standard genre conventions, focusing on detective work and historical research as much as its thriller elements. While the series received moderate attention for its unique premise and pairing of protagonists, it is remembered as a distinct entry in J.C.STAFF’s mid-2010s catalog, representing a specific effort to bring niche light novel mysteries to a wider television audience.
