Where it came from
Violence Jack: Hell's Wind serves as the second installment in the animated adaptation of Go Nagai’s landmark post-apocalyptic manga series. Produced by D.A.S.T. Corporation and released in 1990, this OVA continues the bleak narrative of a Japan devastated by a cataclysmic earthquake, leaving the region of Kanto to descend into a lawless society ruled by brutal gangs and the mysterious, towering protagonist known as Violence Jack.
The adaptation is noted for its adherence to the visceral, transgressive aesthetic of Nagai’s original 1970s source material. The production team aimed to capture the gritty intensity of the manga’s survivalist themes, utilizing the freedom afforded by the OVA format to showcase graphic imagery that pushed the boundaries of contemporary animation. While it became a cult classic among enthusiasts of dark fantasy and 1980s-90s exploitation anime, it was also received as a challenging and divisive work due to its relentless violence and cynical tone.
