Violence Voyager

Violence Voyager was released in 2018 as the second feature film by Japanese creator Ujicha. The project emerged from Ujicha’s distinctive 'gekimation' style, a laborious animation technique that involves painting illustrations on paper, cutting out the characters, and manipulating them against hand-painted backgrounds under a camera. This approach lends the film a jagged, tactile, and intentionally unsettling aesthetic that pays homage to 1970s Japanese horror manga and low-budget cult cinema.

The film follows two boys who wander into a restricted mountain area and stumble upon a sinister amusement park, blending childhood adventure with body horror and existential dread. Ujicha served as the sole writer, director, and illustrator for the production. Upon its international release, it was noted by critics for its uncompromising visual language and its ability to evoke a surreal, nightmarish atmosphere that separates it from standard digital animation, cementing its status as a notable entry in independent genre filmmaking.
