Where it came from
The Violet Evergarden commercial, released in 2016, was produced by Kyoto Animation to promote the light novel series written by Kana Akatsuki. Directed by Taichi Ishidate, the short was crafted to demonstrate the studio's exceptional attention to detail and high-fidelity animation style, effectively serving as a visual proof-of-concept for the emotional depth of the source material before the full series was greenlit.
The design of the promotional spot was heavily influenced by the character designer Akiko Takase, who focused on intricate lighting and character expressions to evoke a sense of melancholy and beauty. Upon its release, the commercial was met with immediate acclaim from the animation community, with many viewers praising the fluid character movement and atmospheric lighting that eventually became the hallmark of the full anime adaptation.
