Where it came from
Vlad Love is an original net animation series directed by Mamoru Oshii and Junji Nishimura, released in 2021. Produced by the studio Drive, the project served as a comedic return to form for Oshii, who is better known for his seminal works in psychological science fiction like Ghost in the Shell. The series was conceptualized as a slapstick comedy revolving around a high school girl with an insatiable appetite for donating blood and a vampire who finds refuge in her school's film club.
The design and artistic direction were heavily influenced by Oshii's desire to experiment with a more frantic, gag-driven style of animation that diverged from his typically solemn narratives. While the series was highly anticipated by longtime fans of Oshii's career, it received a mixed critical reception. Critics noted its unconventional pacing and nostalgic animation aesthetic, acknowledging it as a curious, self-aware experiment that prioritized chaotic character dynamics over traditional linear storytelling.
