Where it came from
The Warashibe Chouja, or 'Straw Millionaire,' is a classic Japanese folktale originating in the Heian period. This specific adaptation was produced by Gakken, a prominent Japanese publishing and educational media company, as part of their long-running series of animated folklore features. These films were developed during the mid-to-late 20th century to preserve cultural heritage for younger generations, utilizing a traditional aesthetic that emphasizes storytelling and moral instruction over high-octane spectacle.
The animation style favored by Gakken for this production reflects the gentle, didactic tone of classic children's educational media. The design focuses on fluid, expressive character work intended to mirror the simplicity of traditional picture books. While not a commercial blockbuster, the film was well-regarded in educational circles for its faithful commitment to the narrative structure of the original folk story, serving as a staple in school libraries and local media centers throughout Japan for several decades.
