Where it came from
Wareware wa Uchuujin da! (We Are Aliens!) was a short-lived but memorable science fiction series produced by NHK in the early 1990s. The program was designed to explore themes of extraterrestrial contact through a blend of imaginative storytelling and the high production values associated with the public broadcaster's educational and cultural programming during that era.
The series is noted for its experimental visual style, which incorporated early digital effects and stylized puppetry to portray alien lifeforms. By leveraging the creative resources of NHK’s internal production units, the show aimed to bridge the gap between speculative fiction and scientific inquiry, eventually gaining a cult following among fans of Japanese experimental television.
