Where it came from
Wasurenai yo was produced by NHK as a poignant commemorative initiative following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. The project served as a medium for survivors and affected communities to share personal messages, stories, and tributes, acting as a historical archive of resilience and collective mourning. By centering the narratives on individual voices, NHK aimed to ensure that the scale of the tragedy remained grounded in human experience rather than just statistical analysis.
The creative direction focused on a minimalist, respectful aesthetic designed to prioritize the emotional weight of the testimonies over elaborate production. Illustrators and production staff worked to maintain a tone of quiet dignity, emphasizing the importance of memory and the continuity of life in the aftermath of disaster. It was received by the Japanese public as a somber but essential cultural artifact, widely regarded as a sincere effort to document the psychological impact of the catastrophe for future generations.
