Where it came from
Watakushiritori is an experimental animated short film produced at the Tokyo University of the Arts, widely known as Geidai, within their prestigious animation department. Created as a collaborative student project, it serves as a testament to the rigorous artistic training and avant-garde spirit fostered by the institution's graduate program, which emphasizes personal expression and unconventional storytelling techniques.
The film draws on the tradition of the shiritori word game, reinterpreting the linguistic chain through a fluid, surrealist visual lens. The design reflects a focus on hand-drawn textures and rhythmic pacing, characteristic of the Geidai house style that prioritizes craftsmanship over commercial appeal. Upon its release, it was noted for its technical ingenuity and whimsical narrative structure, earning recognition within the independent festival circuit as a sophisticated piece of student animation.
