Watt Poe

Watt Poe was released in 1988 as an original video animation, or OVA, produced by Pony Canyon during a period of significant growth for the Japanese home video market. It emerged during an era when studios were increasingly experimenting with unique, often surreal concepts that did not require the broad commercial appeal of television broadcasting. This work is reflective of the experimental aesthetic prevalent in late 1980s Japanese animation, focusing on atmospheric storytelling and distinct visual styles that characterized the boutique titles of the time.

The production sought to blend traditional animation techniques with an avant-garde approach to narrative. While it remains an obscure title today, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of the 1980s OVA boom for its specific artistic execution and its role in the creative landscape of Pony Canyon’s animation ventures. The project was intended to capture a niche audience interested in unconventional themes, though it did not achieve widespread mainstream recognition, ultimately remaining a deeper cut for collectors interested in the specific output of that decade.
