A magical blending of old and new, with colorful animation and an exciting disco/rock musical score, "Winds of Change" is a re-telling of 5 ancient Greek myths. These delightful cautionary tales are adapted from the classical author, Ovid, with a new character, called Wondermaker added. Wondermaker acts as our guide to each episode's meaning, and transforms himself into each of its heroes. First, he is Perseus cutting off the head of Medusa; then, Actaeon being turned into a deer for spying on the goddess Diana as she bathes; the god Mercury in a tale of envy; Orpheus descending into Hades for his love, Eurydice; and finally, Phaeton wreaking havoc with the sun-god's chariot.

Where it came from
Winds of Change, released in 1978, serves as a notable entry in Sanrio’s mid-century effort to expand beyond stationery into feature-length animation. Produced during a period when the company was diversifying its portfolio to include high-quality storytelling, the film was designed to align with the soft, whimsical aesthetic that defined the Sanrio brand identity during the late 1970s.
The production sought to create an atmospheric, poetic experience that moved away from the more aggressive pacing of contemporary commercial animation. By emphasizing emotive visual design and a focus on natural imagery, the studio aimed to cultivate a more artistic reputation. While it remains a niche title within the broader context of the company's output, it is often cited by animation historians as a reflection of the studio's experimental period before they transitioned into the internationally recognized franchise powerhouse seen in later decades.
