Mirai Asahina, a 13-year-old girl who's going into her second year of middle school, witnesses a mysterious object fall in to the park. Excitedly, she brings her stuffed bear Mofurun with her to see what it was. When she gets there she sees a girl named Riko flying on a broom. Mirai has a lot of questions, and Riko explains that she's searching for something. The two of them are wearing similar pendants. Then Batti, an ally of the dark magic user Dokurokushi, appears before them and demands the "Link Stone Emerald." Batti creates a monster called a "Yokubaru" and drives them into a corner. Mirai, Riko, and Mofurun join hands and speak the magic words "Cure-Up Rapapa," their pendants glow, and they become the legendary Precure.

Where it came from
Witchy Precure!, or Maho Girls Precure!, debuted in 2016 as the thirteenth installment in Toei Animation’s long-running magical girl franchise. Developed following the conclusion of Go! Princess Precure, the series served as a thematic shift for the brand by centering its narrative on the partnership between two distinct worlds: the human realm and the secret world of magic. The show was crafted to emphasize the strength found in academic pursuit and the bond of friendship, utilizing the iconic transformation sequence aesthetic that has defined the studio's work in the genre since 2004.
The character designs were overseen by Emiko Miyamoto, whose work sought to balance the traditional frilled, high-energy aesthetic of Precure with a more grounded, school-inspired academic motif. By incorporating motifs such as broomsticks, spellbooks, and rhythmic incantations, Miyamoto and the production team aimed to evoke a classic fantasy atmosphere. Upon its release, the series was well-received by audiences for its focus on the dynamic between Mirai Asahina and Riko Izayoi, marking a notable evolution in the franchise's exploration of interpersonal emotional growth.
