The story moves the "Wixoss" card game to the online virtual space of "Wixossland" as it continues to grow more popular. The game allows players to become the LRIG avatars themselves. The most popular format in the game is "Diva Battle," which allows three players to team up to compete against other units for the most "Selector" fans. Some units are idol-themed, while others are DJ- and band-themed.

Where it came from
WIXOSS DIVA(A)LIVE was produced by studio J.C.STAFF and released in 2021 as a soft reboot of the long-running WIXOSS anime franchise. Moving away from the dark, psychological thriller themes that characterized the original series, this iteration centers on the competitive world of Diva Battle, where players known as Selectors use sentient card avatars to perform in rhythmic, stage-based battles. The shift in tone reflected a pivot toward the idol-themed aesthetics and energetic card-game mechanics that defined the series at the time of its release.
The series design focuses heavily on visual spectacle and character-driven narratives, emphasizing the creative synergy between the performers and their avatars. While the departure from the series' roots was a significant thematic shift, it was received as a stylistic revitalization that aligned the anime more closely with the contemporary direction of the WIXOSS trading card game. By prioritizing a vibrant, battle-idol aesthetic, the production aimed to broaden the appeal of the franchise to fans of music-centered anime and competitive card games alike.
