Where it came from
The 1991 Wizardry OVA was produced by TMS Entertainment as a standalone animation based on the popular dungeon-crawling role-playing game series created by Sir-Tech. At the time, the Wizardry franchise held a significant cultural foothold in Japan, where it became a foundational influence on the local console RPG genre. This adaptation sought to translate the game's challenging, atmospheric, and party-based mechanics into a cinematic format, aiming to capture the dark, mysterious essence of the original computer game's lore.
Directed by Junji Nishimura, the OVA features character designs that lean into the typical high-fantasy aesthetics prevalent in early nineties Japanese animation. It was designed to appeal to existing fans of the game who were eager to see the iconic classes and monstrous creatures of the series brought to life. Upon its release, the production was met with a niche reception, recognized primarily as a curiosity for dedicated enthusiasts of the Wizardry series rather than a broad-reaching animated success.
