Cherry is a quiet boy who loves to make haikus based off of the things he sees. One summer day in a city in the Japanese countryside…
At a shopping mall, he meets Smile, a beautiful girl in a mask. Cherry has trouble speaking in anything but haikus, and Smile wears a mask to hide her big, braces-covered front teeth. The two of them get closer as the south wind blows. One day, the two of them learn from Old Man Fujiyama, a master of Haiku who’s started going senile, that he’s searching for a certain record.
“If I can hear this record again, I can remember… Something I don’t want to forget, but can’t remember…”
Cherry and Smile decide to help. This is the story of their summer, set in a shopping mall…

Where it came from
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop was released in 2021 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the animation studio Flying Dog. Produced by Signal.MD and Sublimation, the project was conceived as an original romantic drama intended to capture the fleeting, sensory experiences of adolescence. Directed by Kyōhei Ishiguro, the film serves as a love letter to the suburban Japanese landscape and the quiet, often unspoken connections formed between young people through shared interests like haiku and music.
The aesthetic design of the film is noted for its vibrant, pop-art-inspired color palette, which stands in contrast to the typically subdued tones of many modern slice-of-life anime. Character designs were provided by Yukiko Aikei, who aimed for a distinctively clean and expressive look to match the film's gentle narrative. Upon its release on streaming platforms, the film was well-received by critics and audiences for its visual ingenuity and its sensitive, sincere exploration of communication barriers between teenagers.
