Where it came from
Xi Xing Ji is a Chinese animated series based on the popular manhua of the same name by Zheng Jian He and Deng Zhi Hui. Produced by the studio BYMENT, the series reimagines the classic Journey to the West epic by subverting traditional narratives. It follows an older, battle-hardened Tang Sanzang who discovers that the scriptures retrieved from the West are actually a tool for deception by the Celestial Court, prompting a new, high-stakes journey to return them.
The animation style is characterized by its gritty, high-contrast aesthetic and dynamic combat sequences, reflecting a shift in Chinese donghua toward more mature, stylized fantasy storytelling. When it premiered as an ONA, it was received positively by audiences for its departure from traditional folklore adaptations, garnering praise for its sophisticated character redesigns and the unconventional portrayal of its mythological cast.
