Xi Xing Ji 2

Xi Xing Ji 2 continues the high-stakes narrative of Tencent Penguin Pictures' 3D animated adaptation of the popular manhua series by Zheng Jianhe and Deng Zhihui. Released as a follow-up to the successful debut season, the ONA maintains the studio’s commitment to high-fidelity motion capture and intricate character modeling, which were central to their strategy of modernizing classic Chinese mythology for a digital-native audience.

The visual language of the series was crafted to emphasize a dark, revisionist take on the Journey to the West legend. By focusing on a grittier aesthetic and complex political alliances within the celestial and demonic realms, the production team sought to distinguish the series from more traditional lighthearted interpretations. Critics and viewers generally received the second season as a refinement of the technical advancements made during the initial run, praising the fluid action sequences and the continued growth of the protagonist, Tang Sanzang.
