Where it came from
Xi Xing Ji 3 serves as the third installment in the animated adaptation of the popular Hong Kong manhua series created by Zheng Jian He and Deng Zhi Hui. Produced by Tencent Pictures and released as an ONA, the series reimagines the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West by introducing a darker, high-fantasy narrative where the original pilgrims must return the sacred scriptures after discovering their true, malevolent nature.
The production maintains the studio's signature high-fidelity 3D animation style, which prioritizes fluid combat choreography and intricate character modeling to suit the source material's gritty aesthetic. Upon its release, the series was well-received by audiences for its departure from traditional interpretations of the folklore, successfully transitioning the manhua's dynamic visual language into a serialized digital format that expanded the franchise's footprint in the global streaming market.
