Xi You Ji: 72 Bian

Xi You Ji: 72 Bian, or Journey to the West: 72 Metamorphoses, was produced by G.S. Pictures Animation as part of an ongoing effort to revitalize classic Chinese literary motifs for a modern animated audience. The film draws directly from the 16th-century novel Journey to the West, specifically focusing on the legendary abilities of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, to transform into seventy-two distinct forms. The production sought to leverage contemporary 3D computer-generated animation techniques to provide a fresh visual interpretation of traditional folklore that has been adapted countless times throughout the history of Chinese cinema.

The creative vision behind this project was to bridge the gap between traditional cultural iconography and the aesthetic expectations of younger, tech-savvy viewers accustomed to high-budget international animation. By centering the narrative on the dynamic and fluid concept of the character's transformations, the design team aimed to experiment with complex visual effects and rapid-paced character rigging. While the film encountered the typical challenges of adapting a deeply ingrained cultural touchstone, it stands as a testament to the persistent popularity of the Monkey King and the studio's commitment to developing domestic IP in a competitive theatrical market.
