Xi You Ji: Dasheng Nao Tiangong

Xi You Ji: Dasheng Nao Tiangong, known internationally as Uproar in Heaven, is a landmark achievement in Chinese animation produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during the early 1960s. The film was created under the direction of Wan Laiming, a pioneer of Chinese animation, who sought to adapt the classic sixteenth-century novel Journey to the West into a visually stunning medium. The production was a monumental effort that utilized traditional ink-and-wash painting techniques to capture the aesthetic of classical Chinese opera and folk art, resulting in a distinct visual language that diverged from the prevailing styles of Western studios.

The film was released in two parts between 1961 and 1964 and remains a quintessential work of the Golden Age of Chinese cinema. Its design, characterized by fluid movement and vivid, expressive character models for the protagonist Sun Wukong, earned widespread acclaim for its artistic ambition and technical sophistication. Despite the interruptions caused by the onset of the Cultural Revolution, the film gained long-standing recognition both domestically and internationally as a masterpiece of animation, influencing generations of animators who admired its unique synthesis of traditional culture and modern cinematic storytelling.
