Where it came from
Xi You Ji: Zai Shi Yao Wang, known internationally as The Monkey King 2, was released in 2016 as a sequel to Filmko Entertainment's 2014 blockbuster adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The film was produced to capitalize on the massive commercial success of its predecessor, continuing the studio's ambitious attempt to build a high-budget, effects-heavy cinematic franchise based on traditional Chinese folklore, specifically focusing on the legend of Sun Wukong.
Directed by Cheang Pou-soi, the production focused on a sophisticated blend of practical makeup and extensive CGI, aiming to offer a visually distinct interpretation of the source material that could compete with global fantasy epics. The design of the characters and the adaptation of the pilgrimage narrative were received as a polished evolution of the first film, with specific critical praise directed toward the performances of Aaron Kwok and Gong Li, who were noted for bringing emotional depth to the archetypal roles of the Monkey King and the White Bone Spirit.
